About the Event
Place Leaders Asia Pacific and the NSW Department of Planning and Environment (DPE) are partnering on a unique two-day hybrid event across 17th–18th March. This online and in-person event will be an exploration of what is changing, how to manage change and preparing for future opportunities to deliver great public space outcomes.

SESSION 1
CONNECTION TO COUNTRY - FIRST NATIONS PRINCIPLES INFLUENCING PLACE OUTCOMES
Place outcomes offer rich opportunities to acknowledge, respect and embed First Nations stories, histories, principles and perspectives in the strategy, policy, design, and outcomes of the places we collectively deliver.
In this session we explore from a practitioner and leadership level, across Australia and Aotearoa (New Zealand) how First Nations perspectives and principles are coming to influence traditional planning and urban renewal systems to find impact and real presence on the ground level.

SUSTAINABILITY AND RESILIENCE
Sustainability and Resilience are fast becoming central to the place vocabulary as we grapple with a pandemic, bush fire recovery, floods, and population growth. They remind us of our humanness, vulnerability and need for social and community connections in times of change to ensure a robust, thriving and environmentally sound future.
In this session, we explore what it means to create places of humanness in times of change, how technology can be an enabler for the ‘people and place’ relationship and where to see the small-scale opportunities to embed inclusivity and diversity in large-scale developments.

STRUCTURING ORGANISATIONS TO DELIVER ON PLACE LEGACY
Place as an approach and direction has slotted into many different levels of leadership within state and local government organisations. Titles such as place activation, place management, place coordinator, place and economic manager and community and place manager have populated the landscape. However, Place is increasingly shifting out of the operations within organisations, to take a position at the top.
In this session, we explore what it means to shift from silo operations to a ‘whole of organisation’ focus on place, what are the best-case or least effective scenarios, how do organisations create the collaborative relationships between agencies and directorates and align policies and strategies to deliver on place legacies.
