In your opinion what is the world’s best place and why?
"It has to be Melbourne. I am a great fan of the central city and its parkland ring. It provides great opportunities for walking and cycling. Melbourne’s small neighbourhoods and city laneways are often a source of surprise!"
What is the worst and why?
"Those places which have suffered irreparable environmental degradation. I feel troubled that the impacts of mankind on the planet are so severe, and that species extinction will continue into the future at a fairly alarming rate."
What place in the world has the most potential and why?
"The place in the world with the most potential is China. The approach taken to development will have a profound impact on shaping the future of most places on earth."
What place gives you that real sense of place?
"Barcelona. It is a city which has adapted its form and that has great architecture and design. The population density and built form work very well. It is a pleasant place to experience and I like the “medium-rise” feel. In addition there is a strong sense of the local culture."
What is your favourite building in the world?
"Actually it is my current home – A very small 1930s flat designed by Romberg. I am continually pleased by the simple design and by how well the building functions. There are many lessons from 1930’s buildings which could be applied to address the requirements for comfortable, affordable and energy efficient housing today."
At home, in your place, what is it you enjoy doing most?
"Listening to music, looking into the tree canopy and planning the next meal!"
