Barangaroo for all of Sydney
Barangaroo is one of the most ambitious and significant waterfront greening projects anywhere in the world. It will transform a vacant 22 hectare industrial site into a new precinct for Sydney, with a new public Headland Park on the harbour and a thriving community, residential and commercial heart.
Barangaroo is the last harbourside location in the Sydney CBD able to be redeveloped and a once in a 200 year opportunity for the city. Barangaroo will reaffirm Sydney’s standing as Australia’s global city, attract new investment and is supported by government, the private sector and the community.
The $6 billion development will see more than 60 percent of the site dedicated to open space and public domain and return more than three hectares of water area to Sydney Harbour. It completes the 14 kilometre harbour foreshore walk from Woolloomooloo to Anzac Bridge and for the first time in more than a century restores public access to the foreshore, the length of which has increased to 2.2 kilometres with the recreated headland and coves.
Over time, 23,000 people will live and work in the precinct with 33,000 visitors expected to visit Barangaroo each day – 12 million a year. Not only will it be a place designed for living and learning, Barangaroo will form the newest hub of Sydney’s financial services sector, consolidating our leadership within Australia and rivalling the financial headquarters of Asia.
After an 18 month rigorous probity-assured competitive process, the winning scheme for the Barangaroo’s southern commercial precinct was awarded to Lend Lease in December 2009. The NSW Premier described the winning Lend Lease proposal as “a striking vision for Sydney” that features a spectacular fan of towers set amid landmark waterfront public spaces, including a large southern cove.
The northern area of Barangaroo will feature a new spectacular Headland Park for the inner harbour based on the shoreline that existed in 1836. John Pilton Walker, in association with Peter Walker and Partners will work with the Barangaroo Delivery Authority to design the new Headland Park and other public spaces.
Detailed planning processes are now underway for Barangaroo South and the Headland Park, with NSW Department of Planning public exhibition and consultation processes to occur over the coming months.
Work is expected to commence in late 2010, with the Headland Park and first buildings in Barangaroo South due to open in 2014.
