Auckland is New Zealand's largest city and home to a diverse community of 425,000 people of European, Polynesian and Asia backgrounds. The city generates a third of the nation's economy.
The city council is implementing an ambitious programme of works to support its aspiration to be the leading city of the Pacific while accommodating future population growth.
Sustainable development principles form the basis of the city's growth management strategy. The strategy aims to accommodate additional housing around existing town centres that have good transport links while enhancing unique community qualities. It also aims to protect business land from residential development.
To achieve this Auckland City Council has identified areas that can accommodate business and residential growth. We are working with these communities to plan for and design well-functioning neighbourhoods that are well served by public transport. We aim to ensure town centres have mixed-use at the core.
Auckland City Council advocates higher density development around transport nodes and along transport corridors. We are committed champions of high quality urban design and have pioneered new development controls for the way the city looks and functions.
Auckland City Council has begun work to realise the potential of the whole CBD waterfront area. A vision to guide how it will be developed as a world-class destination for visitors and Aucklanders as well as how it will be managed and protected for the future is in place. Detailed precinct planning following the principles of the vision is currently underway.
